Perlman’s character, a powerful judge named Pernell Harris, is speaking in tongues because he’s just been born again at that storefront church (complete with red neon cross). It’s trying to do several things at once, but it doesn’t feel particularly layered or complex - it’s as if ideas and subplots are being thrown in to fill out the running time.īut there’s a twist: Mr. “Hand of God,” while smoothly made, nice to look at and mostly well-acted, is also a cautionary example of the pitfalls of the new style of serialized drama. Naked gibbering Ron Perlman is a high point that the show never really gets back to. But none of it is likely to make you forget that initial image. The show’s remaining nine episodes debut on Friday, and there’s an awful lot going on in them - shady land deals, cynical storefront preaching, hot sex with $1,500-an-hour hookers, a likable psycho (Garret Dillahunt) who kills because he thinks he’s getting thirdhand messages from God.
